HELPFUL HINTS

What to wear?

Even with the aura of glitz and glam, casual attire is perfectly fine for a Broadway show. No need to dress up in your fancy evening clothes, even jeans and a t-shirt will be fine. You can head straight to the theater after a day of sightseeing, shopping or more, and not have to worry about having to change. Be sure to bring a light jacket or sweatshirt with you, especially on summer days, since all theaters are air conditioned.

When to eat?

Most shows can run anywhere from two to three hours long so it is highly recommended to have a lunch before a matinee or a dinner before an evening performance. Many restaurants in the Theatre District and Times Square will offer "Prix Fixe" dining options before show time. These meals will normally include an appetizer, main course and a dessert for a fixed price and are a great option for a quick and delicious pre-show meal.

Is there a break during the show?

If a show is longer than two hours, there will normally be a 15 to 20 minute intermission between act one and act two. The intermission is a great time to purchase souvenirs, drinks and snacks. Restrooms will often become quite crowded during this time so be sure to head to the nearest one quickly once the intermission begins. If the show is a one act, there will be no intermission. Be sure to use the restroom before the start of the show so you do not disturb fellow audience members during the performance.

How to get back to the hotel?

Most evening shows will be done at approximately 10:00PM and since the shows often end around the same time, the area can quickly get crowded. If you are looking for a taxi, you will want to head away from the crowds to a quieter side street with less people. Even though NYC subways operate 24 hours a day, train schedules often change later in the evening. Be sure to check the schedule before heading to the station or platform. Choosing a hotel near Times Square is always a great bet since the theaters will always be in walking distance!
